Well, 'material' can have two meanings--relating to matter, as in having mass and volume--as thought of in philosophical naturalism, and something of significance (that which 'matters'). Well either ways, meaning still turns out to be somewhat similar. I do not share your predicament completely, but to some extent you'd find my thoughts on this issue here:
