To have many Good Chocolates, you got to have at least A Good Chocolate to begin with.
But you can have many Bad Memories only if you do not have A Bad Memory at all!

  2. I had read before, and yet again a few days back that the feeling of "I"/"self"/"ego" partly arises from memory of contiguous events right from early childhood. You watch your life in first person, but all the events are seen as a continuous chain. As in the same person gets up from the bed. The same person walks on the small path to the bathroom, wherein in the floor on which bed lies is continuous with floor of the bathroom. The surrounding walls also lead to the bathroom. Then, you come out of the bathroom. The same continuous walls and floor become the streets and the road that lead to your school. They in turn become continuous with walls and floor of the school. Then, your teacher gives you "some" assignment, and you remember doing the very same assignment. And all the events in life are thus physically, logically and chronologically related. And though you might not remember all the events, what you remember is the continuity in time. And the "story" you watch and remember has only one central character - you, yourself!

So, as I said before it has been proposed how this is one of the mechanisms by which feeling of "self" arises.

Thinking about this had made me wonder that the only points this continuity is lost is when we sleep or get unconscious (and of course, upon dying, but then we're not talking afterlife ;) ), and again at least for sleeping what comes to our aid is the memory of having slept and waking up in the same settings. Probably, that's why we get somewhat dazed on waking up from a very realistic dream. The only reassurance of being 'in' reality is our recollection of having slept in that bed in that orientation. And probably, that's why those who regain consciousness in setting very different from when they had lost consciousness (and registration of contiguity of memory), feel so disoriented.

So of course, I'm not at all countering what you said. It was a good pun (not sure if it was technically pun). ;) But just wanted to guard you against wishing something from God, and God granting it to you! :P So, if you decide to ask something from God, do so with 'complete' knowledge of what fulfillment of that wish would entail. :D

    Take care.

  4. I'm confused.

And Ketan's comment confused me even more. Although very interesting, I didn't get how that was relevant to the post.

  5. Srishti,

The only connecting link between Stupidosaur's post and my comment was role a "good" memory plays in our lives. Good memory, as in not memory of happy events, but the ability to remember and recall a great number of events with vividness.

I do sometimes pass on such miscellaneous pieces of information to Stupidosaur, because from my understanding he seems to enjoy understanding and thinking over such topics.
